Music Classes

Various classes are offered during different modules according to interest and demand.

  Spring and Summer 

Music Theory and Fundamentals for Young Persons - Saturdays, times to be determined

Learn composition and accompanying through series of written projects in melody and harmony.  

Fun With Theory - Saturdays, times to be determined

Classes for younger children, focusing on note reading, rhythm, musical games.

Adult Organ Class

Everything you wanted to know about the organ but were afraid to ask.

Principles of organ registration and command of the console. Studies in authentic performance practice and bringing your playing to life. Organ repertoire for the student and church organist. Lecture, listening, demonstration, visiting various class member's churches. Thursdays at 7:15 p.m. with supper. Seven weeks - $300

 

Music Theory Workshop

Analysis and theory are the key to learning music and performing. Study of music fundamentals and score study through the completion of several musical projects. Rhythmic projects, melody writing, and harmonization.  One class per week for six weeks.


The New World of Gregorian Chant

After a period of disuse and neglect, the chant is enjoying a resurgence. Discussion will include the historical, ecclesiastical, musical, and political aspects of the chant, as well as reading, transcribing, singing, and conducting, plus chant-based organ works.  Six Weeks. $350

 

 

Musical Periods and Styles – Music of J. S. Bach

Music of this composer is presented through listening and discussion with an emphasis on historical perspective and relation to other art forms. Discussion and listening. Six weeks.  One class per week.

Church Organ for Pianists

Use your piano skills to embark on a new career as a church organist or substitute organist. Organ registration, pedal technique, hymn and service playing, as well as basic organ fundamentals will be covered. One class per week. Six weeks.

Voice Class

Learn the basics of singing in a group setting. Study proper breathing, tone production, and work on repertoire. Learning about the voice is enjoyable in a group setting where all can participate and make music together. Six weeks.

Keyboard Performance Workshop

Learn the skills of performance and recital preparation. Discussion and application of how to ready pieces to play and how to overcome performance anxiety.  One class per week for six weeks.

African Drumming

Learning  to play a variety of African drums  help strengthen rhythmic and coordinational skills in children, as well as provide a pleasant musical group experience.

Group instruction and ensemble playing. Six Weeks

Analytical Techniques I

Working with score analysis as a key to understanding compositions toward better performance. Areas discussed will be harmonic analysis, recognizing salient features, constructing graphs and charts, and reduction analysis. Wednesdays or Saturdays.

 

The Glory of the Arts in Russia

A listening-intensive exploration of music in the

context of Russian art, culture, and literature. Instrumental, choral, opera, and ballet will be discussed. Six Weeks.

All times are to be arranged and my include evenings as well as day times and will run based on enrollment. Tuition listed is for class instruction – individual instruction is based on the hourly conservatory rate. Any of our class offerings may be taken as a directed study, but tuition will be charged based on our hourly rate. Classes are held at nearby Hingham, Cohasset, or Hull location. All fees must be paid prior to beginning the first session.
